Day 6 Sommieres to Saint-Remy de Provence

Saturday in France means markets, hunting and cycling. There were some navigational challenges around the market in Sommieres and then shooting groups wearing high-vis jackets in the countryside - presumably the boar are colour blind!
Out first coffee stop was the local French Oundle Beans equivalent and it was great to see so many older ladies in the groups.



This was my TdF moment of overtaking a French cyclist - I think he was probably well into his 70’s!

Next stop was the Pont du Gard, a very impressive Roman aqueduct bridge. 





It brought back very happy memories of a fabulous weekend in Nimes with Katie when she was au pairing near here for a summer. We hired ridiculously heavy bikes and had a very hot bike ride to the Pont du Gard. Fortunately Bob is more of a lightweight but it was still very warm today.
Just before lunch we crossed the Rhône which is very wide and fast flowing, we had to guess how Hannibal’s army and elephants managed to get across it without being slaughtered by the Gauls on the far bank.

We guessed correctly re rafts and pulleys but the really clever bit was sending the cavalry to cross the river further north and smoke signalling them when to attack the Gauls from the rear, thereby winning the battle.
Lunch was at the Abbaye Saint-Michel de Frigolet with a beautiful church and a descent with towers on the side of the road - definitely a first on the bike for me!





We were then into Provence and heading to Saint-Remy de Provence where James left the van, grabbed his bike and joined us for a circular route via Les Baux-de-Provence and a couple of cheeky climbs through spectacular scenery.

Back at the hotel, this is the view from my very comfortable room..

Van Gogh spent some time in a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Remy and produced more than 150 paintings of the surrounding countryside. 

We had a pre-dinner walk around the beautiful town but sadly no alcohol free beer to be found here, Diet Coke is really not the same.

Dinner was the Autumn menu ‘a la Table de Nicolas’ - seasonal and delicious, although not convinced I want it to be autumn yet.
